What Is a Gravity Bong?
A gravity bong is a DIY smoking device that uses water and air pressure to draw dense, concentrated smoke into a chamber. When used, it delivers an intense hit—often stronger than traditional pipes or bongs—making it a favorite among seasoned smokers and DIY enthusiasts alike.
There are two main types of gravity bongs:
- Bucket-style (aka waterfall): Uses an upper bottle and a bucket of water
- Waterfall-style: Uses a single bottle with a hole at the bottom that drains to pull smoke
Today, we’re showing you the bucket-style gravity bong—it’s the most popular and arguably the most fun to make.
Materials You’ll Need
Before we start, gather these materials. You probably already have most of them around the house:
- 1 large plastic bottle (2-liter recommended)
- 1 smaller plastic bottle (16 oz or so)
- Aluminum foil or a bowl piece
- Scissors or a sharp knife
- A lighter
- Water
- Your favorite flower
How to Make a Gravity Bong: Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cut the Bottles
Take your larger bottle and cut the top third off—you’ll be using this as your “bucket.” Next, take your smaller bottle and cut the bottom inch off. This smaller bottle will act as your smoke chamber.
Step 2: Create the Bowl
If you’re using aluminum foil, shape a small bowl over the bottle cap of the smaller bottle. Poke several tiny holes in it for airflow. If you have a proper bowl piece (like one from an old bong), even better—just fit it snugly into the cap.
Tip: Use a toothpick or safety pin for the holes—too big and you'll lose herb, too small and airflow suffers.
Step 3: Fill the Bucket with Water
Fill the bottom (larger) bottle about 2/3 full with water. This will serve as the base that creates suction to draw in the smoke.
Step 4: Pack the Bowl
Put your herb into the aluminum foil bowl or glass bowl piece. Make sure it’s not too tight—you want smooth airflow.
Step 5: Submerge and Spark
Submerge the small bottle into the larger bottle’s water, leaving only the bowl portion above the surface. Hold it in place. Then, light the bowl while slowly lifting the small bottle upward. As it rises, smoke will be drawn into the chamber through water displacement. Science!
Step 6: Inhale the Magic
Once the small bottle is almost fully lifted and filled with smoke, unscrew the cap or remove the bowl piece. Place your mouth over the bottle opening and push the bottle back down into the water—this will force the smoke directly into your lungs. Inhale and... take it easy!
Troubleshooting & Tips
- Harsh hits? Add ice to the water to cool the smoke.
- No suction? Make sure your bowl has enough airflow and that your cap is airtight.
- Bottle leaking? Double-check for clean, even cuts. Or switch to sturdier materials.
- Want to upgrade? Try a glass gravity bong kit for a cleaner and reusable experience.
