The complete guide to cleaning your bong, from a quick 5-minute refresh to a deep clean for stubborn buildup. Covers glass, silicone, and percolator bongs.
A dirty bong ruins the taste, makes every hit harsher, and builds up bacteria in the water and resin. That brown sludge coating the inside of your piece isn't just gross. It's actively making your smoking experience worse with every session.
A clean bong hits smoother, tastes better, and lasts longer. Resin buildup can weaken glass over time, and mold can grow in stagnant bong water within 24 hours. The good news is that cleaning takes five minutes with the right method and costs almost nothing.
The classic cleaning combo has been the go-to for decades because it works and it's cheap:
If you prefer a premade solution, bong cleaning products like Formula 420 or Grunge Off work well and skip the measuring. But ISO and salt is just as effective and significantly cheaper.
For regular weekly maintenance or when your bong is only lightly dirty:
Step 1: Empty and rinse. Pour out the old water. Rinse the bong with hot water for 30 seconds to loosen fresh residue and warm up the glass. Hot water alone removes a surprising amount.
Step 2: Remove the downstem and bowl. Take out all removable pieces and set them aside. They get cleaned separately.
Step 3: Add ISO and salt. Pour about a quarter cup of coarse salt into the bong through the mouthpiece. Follow with enough isopropyl alcohol to fill the base about halfway. The ratio doesn't need to be exact.
Step 4: Seal and shake. Cover the mouthpiece and joint opening with your hands, rubber stoppers, or plastic wrap. Shake vigorously for 60 to 90 seconds. The salt scrubs the walls while the alcohol dissolves the resin. You'll see the liquid turn brown almost immediately.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly. Pour out the dirty solution and rinse with hot water at least three times. Make sure no salt or alcohol residue remains. Hold it up to the light to check for missed spots.
Pro Tip Rinse with hot water before adding ISO. The heat loosens resin and makes the alcohol work faster. Never use boiling water on cold glass though, as the thermal shock can crack it. Warm to hot tap water is perfect.
For bongs that haven't been cleaned in a while or have thick, caked-on resin:
Step 1: Hot water soak. Fill the bong with hot tap water and let it sit for five minutes. This softens hardened resin and makes everything easier to remove.
Step 2: Drain and add the solution. Empty the water. Add a generous amount of coarse salt and fill with 91%+ ISO. More is better for heavy buildup.
Step 3: Shake hard. Seal the openings and shake aggressively for two to three minutes. Focus on rotating the bong so the salt reaches all surfaces, including the neck and any percolators.
Step 4: Soak. If shaking alone doesn't get it clean, let the bong sit with the solution inside for 30 minutes to an hour. For extreme cases, overnight soaking works. The alcohol will continue dissolving resin while it sits.
Step 5: Shake again and rinse. After soaking, give it another round of shaking. Rinse with hot water until the glass is completely clear and there's no alcohol smell.
Step 6: Spot check. Hold the clean bong up to a light. Any remaining residue will show as dark spots or film. Hit those areas with a pipe cleaner dipped in ISO if needed.
Your downstem and bowl collect the most residue since smoke passes through them first. Clean them every time you clean the bong.
Ziplock bag method: Drop your downstem and bowl into a ziplock bag. Add enough ISO to submerge them and a tablespoon of coarse salt. Seal the bag, shake for 60 seconds, then let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with hot water.
Pipe cleaners: After the soak, run pipe cleaners through the downstem to clear any remaining residue from the inside and the diffusion slits. A thin brush works for bowls.
The joint connection: Don't forget to clean the ground glass joint where the downstem meets the bong. Resin buildup here can make pieces stick together or create a bad seal. A cotton swab dipped in ISO handles this quickly.
Bongs with built-in percolators require more patience. The small holes and internal chambers trap resin that simple shaking can't always reach.
For honeycomb and showerhead percs: Fill the bong with ISO and salt, then shake gently in multiple directions. Tilt the bong so the solution flows through all the perc holes. Let it soak for 20 to 30 minutes, then shake again. Repeat if needed.
For tree percs: Be gentle. The arms are fragile. Fill with ISO, let it soak longer (an hour minimum), and use gentle rocking motions rather than hard shaking. Never force liquid through the arms with pressure.
For recyclers: Fill both chambers with ISO and salt through every opening. The connecting tubes are the hardest part. Let the solution soak overnight if the tubes are clogged. Run hot water through the piece from different angles to flush everything out.
Prevention Tip Clean percolator bongs more frequently than simple pieces. Weekly cleaning prevents the small holes from clogging. Once a perc is fully clogged with hardened resin, it's extremely difficult to restore full function.
Silicone bongs are easier to clean than glass in some ways but trickier in others. Silicone is porous, so it can absorb odors and residue over time.
Do: Use warm water and dish soap for regular cleaning. You can also put most silicone pieces in the dishwasher (top rack, no glass parts). For deeper cleaning, freeze the silicone bong for a few hours. The resin hardens and peels off easily.
Don't: Use ISO on silicone. Alcohol can degrade silicone over time, making it sticky and discolored. Stick to soap and water or specialty silicone cleaners.
Here's a realistic cleaning schedule that keeps your bong hitting fresh without being a chore:
After every session: Dump the water. This single habit prevents 80% of buildup and eliminates bacterial growth. Takes 10 seconds.
Every 3 to 4 sessions: Quick rinse with hot water. Removes loose residue before it hardens.
Once a week: Full ISO and salt clean (the 5-minute quick method). This keeps your bong looking and tasting like new.
Once a month: Deep clean including all accessories, joint connections, and any percolators.
Using boiling water. Boiling water poured into cold glass can cause thermal shock and crack your bong. Stick to hot tap water. If you want to use very hot water, warm the glass gradually first.
Using 70% ISO. The extra water content makes it far less effective at dissolving resin. Always use 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol.
Skipping the rinse. Residual alcohol and salt taste terrible and can be irritating to inhale. Rinse at least three times with clean water after every clean.
Letting water sit overnight. Stagnant bong water grows bacteria and mold within hours. Always dump the water after your session, even if you're not doing a full clean.
Cleaning silicone with ISO. Isopropyl alcohol degrades silicone. Use soap and water instead.
Ignoring the downstem. The downstem gets dirtier faster than the bong itself. If you only clean one thing, clean the downstem.
Yes, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol is the primary cleaning agent. Use 91% or 99% concentration for best results. 70% has too much water and doesn't dissolve resin effectively. Pair it with coarse salt for a complete clean.
A full ISO and salt clean removes the smell. For lingering odors, soak the bong in a mixture of warm water and white vinegar (50/50) for an hour after your ISO clean. Rinse thoroughly. The vinegar neutralizes odor that alcohol alone might not eliminate.
Not recommended. The high heat and water pressure can crack thin glass, and dishwasher detergent may leave residue that's unsafe to inhale. Stick to the ISO and salt method for glass. Silicone pieces can usually go in the dishwasher.
White vinegar or lemon juice removes hard water buildup (calcium and mineral deposits). Fill the bong with white vinegar, let it soak for a few hours, then scrub with salt. Rinse and follow with your normal ISO clean. To prevent hard water stains, use filtered or distilled water in your bong.
Acetone (nail polish remover) works but is harsher and requires extra rinsing. White vinegar and baking soda work for light buildup but can't handle heavy resin. Specialty bong cleaners from our cleaning supplies collection are formulated specifically for glass and work without alcohol.
If resin has fully clogged a perc, soak the bong in warm (not hot) ISO for several hours or overnight. The alcohol slowly dissolves the clog. Gently tilt and rotate the bong periodically to help the solution reach all the blocked holes. Patience is key as forcing liquid through can crack the perc.
